My Skin Care Routine

Until just a few years ago I honestly hardly washed my face. I thought I had super sensitive skin, and most drug store products would easy disrupt whatever balance I had found with my skin. So for the longest time, the extent of my nighttime skincare routine was placing a hot cloth on my face and climbing into bed.

Then I turned 35 years old.

All of a sudden I woke up one morning it seems and became aware of how important it was to take care of my skin (although my mom, with the most beautiful skin ever, always harped me on this). And even though I felt I had rode the genetic coattails of having clear skin for so long, if I’m being completely honest with myself, my skin wasn’t looking as vibrant as I would have liked.

Part of the reason I never did much in the way of skincare was that I didn’t have the slightest clue where to start. Walking into Sephora was an honest nightmare for me. I felt completely out of place there, not to mention overwhelming.

After reading “Ageless Beauty the French Way” and dogearing half the book, I took notes on everything I should be doing. The book laid out exactly what to do and in which order which works so well for my personality. So after reading it for the first time, I scoured the internet and Sephora for all the necessary items I needed to be a grown-ass woman.

While the book gave me a great place to start, the endless options still overwhelmed me a bit. This is when I found myself turning to a company I had already trusted for a few years at this point and purchasing all of the items I needed with them.

Why I Use Beautycounter Products

Beautycounter is a company I trust… deeply. Since 2013 they have been obsessively testing with a third party for ingredients in their products that are irritating, harmful or toxic. The US currently only bans 30+ toxic ingredients in the cosmetic and skincare industry, while Europe bans over 1400. That’s a big difference, right? What are we doing over here? Beautycounter actually goes even above that and is currently banning over 1800 ingredients, and still counting.

I trust them.

In addition to being safer, it is important to the company that the products are effective and get results. And more recently, it has been a focus for Beautycounter to be intentional about the sustainability of the packaging and processes as well.

This company continues to make me proud to spend my dollars with them.

My Skincare Routine

The photo on the right is my skin before using my skincare routine listed below consistently

My morning skincare routine

Cleanse

Countertime Lipid Defense Cleansing Oil– I use this only when I am not washing my face in the shower. You put the pea size amount of oil on dry skin, rub it in, and then add warm water to your face to create a milk. It acts as a double cleanser. I made the mistake the first few times I used this to skip the “add warm water to your skin” piece. When I washed the oil off with a washcloth it still felt heavy on my skin. Adding the warm water to the oil and rubbing in before washing off is an important step if you want to feel cleansed and fresh.

Countermatch Refresh Foaming Cleanser – Even though I really love what the Countertime regimen as a whole has done for my skin the most, I actually prefer this cleanser. If I am in the shower when washing my face, I will apply a pea size amount to my face and it will foam up almost instantly. The smell… the smell is intoxicating. I have no idea what it smells like, but I love it so much. If I am not in the shower when I wash my face, I will actually put the product on my skin dry, then add water to work it into a lather then wash off.

Tone

Countermatch Hydra-Gel Radiance Toner This bottle lasts forever! I actually had mine for 6 months. This toner has almost a gel consistency. It feels amazing. I prefer this one to the Countertime Essence (which I also use on occasion). It is also less expensive than the Countertime toner!

Serum

Countertime Tripeptide Radiance Serum– This high impact serum is amazing for reducing fine lines and wrinkles, reducing pores and giving an overall tighter appearance to your skin. I almost immediately (think 3 days) noticed a difference in my skin when I switched some of my products over to Countertime (one of them being this product).

All Bright Vitamin C Serum- In the morning, after applying the radiance serum, I put the Vitamin C serum on. It smells amazing, protects my skin throughout the day from environmental stressors, and helps to lighten discolorations and sunspots. It’s an amazing product! Read my review here.

**I layer both of these serums daily

Moisturize

Countermatch Adaptive Moisture LotionI love this moisturizer. Its wonderful for people with combination skin or overall balanced skin. Its more gentle than the Countertime Soft Cream, but yet still has anti-aging benefits (not nearly as potently however, so if you’re going for anti-aging, try the entire Countertime line for a while!).

I really like to add a couple of drop of the Brightening Oil to my moisturizer for a big kick of brightening and glow.

Eye Cream

Countertime Ultra Renewal Eye Cream- I am not as great about putting eye cream on regularly, but this is hands down the best one I have tried. It’s thick and cooling and feels super luxurious in it’s little pink glass jar.

Sunscreen

I don’t really wear a lot of sunscreen on my body most of the time. I have thoughts about the importance of vitamin D, and instead put on long sleeves or go inside when I have had enough sun. Not to mention, I get a heat rash on my skin if I’ve been outside too long, and my skin does not care if I have sunscreen on or not. However, out of vanity, I have started wearing sunscreen on my face almost every day. I use Dew Skin tinted moisturizer as my daily sunscreen as it has SPF 20. (read my full review here). I also have started using the Sheer Defense Face Sunscreen this year on the days I’m not using Dew Skin.

My nighttime skincare routine

I am such a makeup and skincare minimalist that I don’t have much of a change for my nighttime routine except just a few things. So instead of listing out everything in the same way I did above, I will list the differences instead. I know you got stuff to do :-p

Serum

Overnight Resurfacing Peel- I love, love, love this product. I truly believe that this product alone has done wonders for my skin. I put two pumps of this on my skin every OTHER night after I use my toner and before I moisturize. I do notice a big difference when I let it sit on my skin and dry (about 3-5 minutes) before putting on my moisturizer (You can read my full review HERE).

Moisturizer

Countertime Supreme Cream- This cream is so thick and luxurious. I used to have a lot of issues with really dry skin, especially in the winter, but I honestly can’t remember the last time I have felt like my skin has been overly dry. This is a moisturizer that I have used nightly for the last 3 years and I don’t see why I would use anything else.

Lip balm

Bioderma Lip Conditioner– This is a lip conditioner I read about in the “Ageless Beauty the French Way” book I mentioned above. I have continued to purchase this lip conditioner over and over again. It’s so good. It’s a 3 rating on the EWG which I’m okay with. But I love the way it helps restore moisture to my lips overnight.

I know that this seems like a lot (or maybe it doesn’t to you, but it did to me at first), but in all, this whole routine takes me 3-5 minutes in the morning and 3-5 minutes at night before I go to bed. And don’t you think that we deserve to take 10 minutes of our whole day to care for ourselves? I do 🙂

This is an effective routine. Thanks for the post. I just follow a cleansing regimen before going to bed. It is a good way to wake up fresh and beautiful in the morning. The products are superb. I use Ayurvedic products. It works for me. But I would love to try these for my night time routine.
