An Honest Review of Being a Beautycounter Consultant

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Curious about being a Beautycounter consultant? I thought I would finally put together an FAQ post about being a consultant, after thinking about it for a year. If I am anything like you, I wanted to do my homework and research well before I reached out to anyone about becoming a consultant.

I actually recruited myself! So it’s ridiculous that it has taken me this long to write a post when this is what I was looking for when I was considering becoming a consultant.

If you don’t have your specific questions answered here, please feel free to comment with your questions, email me at jenny600@gmail.com. And if you want to be added to my Beautycounter newsletter with tutorials, product information and promotions, you can sign up for that here.

An honest review on becoming a Beautycounter Consultant…

What does it cost to become a Beautycounter consultant?

It costs $50 to sign up to become a consultant. That $50 gets you a lot! You’ll get a beautiful, professional website that links directly to your products when you sign up. You’ll also get access to Counter University which is our training program. So, if you’re a sucker for information, there is a lot available to you. You’ll get digital marketing materials to use as well.

Band of Beauty members, it only costs $21 to upgrade to a consultant!

After I sign up as a Beautycounter consultant, what happens next?

Once you sign up as a consultant, you have the opportunity to purchase a Starter Kit. A starter kit is a set of products that you can purchase at about 40% off the retail price. You don’t HAVE to do this, but I would recommend it.

Having a selection of products on hand is great for hosting parties. I lend products out to friends who want to try it all the time. It’s also great to have a larger selection of products to try for yourself! It’s easier to recommend products and feel excited about them when you have used them personally.

Within the first week, you’ll hear from me as your mentor! I will give you as little or as much support as you would like. I’ll give you an outline of very simple steps you can take in your first month to kickstart your business well.

Do Beautycounter consultant get a discount?

Yes! We get 25% off your own personal orders.

In addition to our discount, I have earned free products and gifts for my hard work throughout the time I’ve been with the company! I’m also super excited that incentive trips are coming back after the pandemic years. I joined in 2020, so in the time I have been with the company, we have never had one. If you’re anything like me and work really well with incentives and the metaphorical “carrot” dangling in front of you, there are always fun things to work toward!

Are there any monthly purchase requirements or minimums?

There are no monthly purchase requirements or minimums. However, there needs to be some sort of requirement to keep such a generous discount, right? So, you do need to sell $750 in qualifying sales volume (which is just fancy speak for anything you sell + your own personal purchases) every 6 months.

Is that hard to hit? No… I exceeded that in my first month. On average, I would say that most consultants who are interested in growing a business would hit that minimum in the first 1-2 months!

Remember too, that your personal purchases would also count toward that $750! As I said, there is no REQUIREMENT for you to purchase anything. Although, if you want to be a Beautycounter consultant, you probably like the products enough to purchase at least some things, and that amount would count toward your 6-month requirement.

What happens if I don’t hit the minimum?

Nothing dramatic happens!

If you don’t hit the $750 minimum in the 6-month period, you’ll just be dropped down to a Band of Beauty member, which is honestly a really great program as well and has great perks!

How much commission does a Beautycounter consultant make?

I think we have a super generous compensation plan. We get paid 25-35% commission on every order you sell. The percentage increases on each order the more you sell 😉

Let’s say you sell 2 orders this month (the average amount per order is about $150). That would be $300 in sales, which would give you 25% in commissions. So in this case, you would be paid $75 on the 10th of the following month.

If you were to sell more, let’s say $3000, then you would get paid 35% on every order from that month (not just the ones that got you to the highest commission bracket) and would be paid $1050 on the 10th of the following month.

In addition to your own sales, you do have the opportunity to “grow a team” of consultants and earn a small percentage for mentoring them in their own business.

…so Beautycounter is an MLM?

Yes it is. Or direct sales… or social selling. Consultants get paid 5-9% commission on any sales from my “downline consultants” aka, consultants who signed up with me. But there is a much larger commission for your own sales (25-35%) so this company really rewards and encourages you to pull your own weight and work on your own business.

This company structures their compensation plan so that you can’t sit back and relax while someone else on your team busts their butts and you get all the glory.

Mentors work hard! We are always available to answer any questions, we give you a good boost when you’re first getting started, and you have access to all of our documents, content and resources. I think it’s more than fair to have mentors compensated 5-9% for the work they put in.

Do your consultant get paid less for your “cut”?

No, the consultants on my team are not getting paid less for paying me the 5-9% commission out of their paychecks. The 5-9% comes straight from the company as a way to reward consultants with a team for mentoring!

If you still think that you’re stuck on the MLM thing, I would highly recommend checking out Kristen Boss and the work she is doing. She is working her buns off to change the “hustle culture” and has such a wealth of encouragement for direct sales men and women who don’t want to be a big ole’ weirdo. I love her.

Do I have to recruit?

Not at all. There are no requirements to “build a team”, and I’m not going to pressure you to do that.

I will say, I started out this business thinking I would never have any interest in that, but as time has gone on, I am craving to have more of a community to do this alongside of. It’s more fun to do things together. But there is no requirement to do that.

How Beautycounter is different

You know, I loved this company for a solid 6 years before I decided to be a Beautycounter consultant. I wish I had jumped in sooner. But where I am going with this is that often times, when you love a company, and then you get close enough to see behind the curtain, it disappoints you. I have found the opposite to be true about this company. You can ask anyone around me if this is true, I say this constantly.

I have been ever impressed with the integrity of this company and all that they are trying to do.

From the mission to have safer, cleaner products, to the drive to educate women and empower them to be their own health advocate, to the fact that we’re a very highly rated certified B Corp, to the work we are doing on the “the hill” to try to get actual laws changed

… I think this company is a stud.

But how is it different within in the direct sales model?

In terms of how the company is different in the direct sales model? Here we go:

  • there are no auto ships or monthly purchase requirements for yourself or customers. I LOVE that I don’t need to buy ANYTHING I don’t like, and in reality, I don’t have to buy anything at all if I don’t want to! And I love that my customers don’t need to buy anything to keep any sort of “status” and can just buy when they want something, just like any other store!
  • You don’t need to buy through a consultant if you don’t want to. We have other avenues for purchase! We have multiple brick-and-mortar shops now all over the country, and you can buy straight from the website, retail-style, without a consultant. Do I think it’s best to buy through a consultant? Heck yes… my customers are treated great! I check in on them and see if they have any questions regularly, they get customized recommendations if they want them, I send gifts out at times, and special promotions. I love my clients… and that is a major perk of going through a consultant.

Do I have to hold products or keep an inventory?

No! Everything is done through your website, so there is no product inventory that you need to hold or shipping hassle to deal with.

What is the earning potential?

That depends on you! It comes down to, how hard do you want to work and how much time do you want to put into this? This business model is not a “get rich quick” scheme as some people may think… Just like anything, it takes hard work and diligence to get what you want out of it.

When I first started the business, I was making enough to pay for my products (yay! I have never had to pay for my products since I have started out of our personal checking account). Now, I am making enough most months to pay for most of our groceries and my products! That is nothing to scoff at… especially since I’m putting no more than 6-8 hours a week into my business.

Here is a chart to give you an idea of how much you could make in this business to give you an idea:

Okay, but I don’t want to be salesy

To that I say, GOOD!! I don’t want to be salesy either…! But I also want to offer this thought too… as people, we are ALWAYS SELLING! Like a new restaurant, you tell everyone about it! Love a pair of jeans you just got, you’re telling people about it. I feel like “selling” gets a bad rep… But honestly, I LOVE selling! It feels really good to have a friend tell they love what these products are doing for their skin…

…because of a recommendation that I MADE!

I mean, does she seem upset that I “sold” to her?

My biggest skeptic…

Here’s a side story, my best friend was my absolute biggest skeptic. She heard I was joining a direct sales company and was all kinds of “walls up” about it. At some point, I ended up buying her a Christmas gift that contained our top 3 selling products. There was no intention of “selling” to her… I knew she wasn’t going to buy from me… I DID, however, want her to try the products because I felt she would love them.

Let me just say, she is my #1 best customer to date. She cannot say enough good words about these products. She emails and texts me about them ALL THE TIME!! It cracks me up so much because I remember how resistant and skeptical she was.

If I hadn’t “sold” to her, she would have been missing out on these products. She loves her products so much and feels they have made her feel so amazing about her skin!!

…and that would suck :-p

…but can I be authentic in this business?

But being authentic is super important to me, so I get this concern. Truly I do. So in this case, I truly believe that I am your girl. This is a high value of mine, and I can show you how to be yourself doing this business.

Go ahead and go check out my Beautycounter Facebook page, watch my videos. You’ll see that I am a big ole’ nerd. I don’t know how to apply makeup, I barely washed my face up until 2019, and yet, I am still over here doing my thing. I love serving my customers well and I’m doing well in this business even though I didn’t know much starting out!

Do I need a big following on social media?

You do not need to have a big following (or any at all) on social media to do this business.

I can help you figure out how to grow this business in a way that feels good and very real to you.

Do I need to use social media to build a business?

Great question. I recently made the decision to come off social media altogether. It didn’t feel healthy for me. If what is holding you back from jumping into this mission is that you don’t want to mess with social media, or add anything business related to your social account, let me work with you! I have all kinds of ideas on how to do this, and I feel strongly that I can help mentor you well in this business in a way that feels authentic and honors your time, and makes you most feel like yourself.

How much time do I need to dedicate?

Totally up to you! When I first started out in this business I think I was only working 1-2 hours a week.

I am a full-time stay-at-home homeschooling mom of 3, and I was able to find time after my kids went to bed.

Currently, I work 5-8 hours a week. 4 of those hours are with a sitter that I pay for from this business. Bonus!

update: I have a very specific, action-oriented plan for you to grow your business in 60 minutes a day (5 days a week, even). So if you’re willing to give this business 3-5 hours a week, and be consistent with it, it would be near impossible for you not to grow your business and make a great supplementary income. **if you’d like to make more, we will talk directly after you join me and I will be able to give you more direct numbers you would need to hit to make specific incomes

I don’t know enough about skincare or makeup. How can I sell the products then…

Are you willing to learn? I knew nothing about being a Beautycounter consultant or skincare when I started; but after being in this business for multiple years now, I am amazed at what comes out of my mouth!

If you are willing to learn and possibly feel awkward at times, you’ll learn so much faster than you can imagine.

Do you enjoy being a Beautycounter consultant?

Absolutely. I joined during the Covid pandemic, and it was honestly the biggest blessing during that time. Feeling connected to a group of women all over the country during such a lonely time was such a blessing.

There are women all over the country that I could call up to grab a coffee at this point. What a gift that is!

Another gift this business has given me is the opportunity to use the other side of my brain. After being a SAHM for many years now, I have let that slip a bit. I love being a mom, but I also consider myself creative-minded, and I love business.

And let’s not forget that there is extra income involved. Having the extra breathing room in our budget each month has been wonderful. This job has been such a gift to me in so many ways!

Okay, that all sounds great…I want to learn how to join!

Amazing! I can’t wait to connect with you and hear what you want out of this business. You can learn even more by reading more about it directly on the Beautycounter website, or fill this out so we can start a more direct conversation.

If you’re ready and want to get started, you can sign up as a Beautycounter consultant with this link. Choose “Jennifer Araza” as your consultant so I can work with you as your mentor.
