Winter Walking: What’s Keeping Me Warm Outside

Last month I went back and forth with my husband about whether or not I wanted to get a treadmill so that I could stay consistent with running or walking.

My brain works so much better when I move my body daily.

But with a whole lot of deliberation, I eventually came to the conclusion that if I got a treadmill, I would find myself walking a whole lot less outside… and let me tell you, winter running/walking is my favorite.

The fresh, icy cold air, turning my cheeks a bright pink—nothing makes me feel as alive as that.

I knew if I got a treadmill, I would be starting at the granite clad walls of our basement a large portion of my walks rather than taking in the fresh air and views of the New England homes snuggled under blankets of snow.

So, no treadmill for me.

HOWEVER, just heading outside with no clothing strategy will have me ringing up the treadmill sellers again in no time…

It’s been a bit of a process of trial and error, but I feel really good about my clothing situation right now! So here are the products that left me feeling cozy and warm on my walks and runs in the last few weeks. They have proven to keep me warm and dry for the whole walk, time and again.

Winter Running/Walking Gear That’s Keeping Me Warm

1.running hat– Nick got me this for Christmas a couple of years ago on a whim. He had no idea I would be so excited about it. It covers my ears, and also has a ponytail hole. It’s the perfect running/walking hat for winter.

2. wool neck/face warmer– This is a must in colder temps (think 20 and below). If you don’t wear one of these your skin literally starts to feel like it’s burning, and your face will stop working, haha. That being said, although fleece is super warm, I hate fleece face and neck warmers. It brings me back to my days of 100-mile snowmobile riding days and the amount of condensation that would form on it from breathing into that thing all day long. Just. Gross. This wool one keeps me warm while still wicking moisture away from my face. I have the yellow one 🙂

3.LL Bean boots– not ideal for running—obviously. But if you’re walking and the streets are at all slippery, these are so great. They’re light, they’re grippy, and you’ll wear them everywhere, so it’s a great investment…IMHO.

4. wool exercise socks before investing in a few pairs of wool running socks, I would go on walks and my toes literally went numb. I tend to struggle with circulation to my feet in general but walking in temperatures below 20 degrees will eventually cut off circulation to each and every toe. Not the best feeling for walking… These socks keep my toes nice and toasty, and if it’s exceptionally cold I am known to layer them, too.

5. North Face fleece lined mittens– the. best. mittens. ever. So soft and snuggly. My fingers have not once even considered being cold since having these. I could not recommend these more!

6.fleece lined leggings I am obsessed with these. I ended up asking for a second pair for Christmas and I might need to buy more. They fit like lululemons align leggings, no sagging or weird fit—but are also lined with fleece! I struggle to choose to wear jeans each day when I know those leggings are just sitting in my drawer all snuggly and soft. Truly, they are so amazing and so affordable!

Message me if you have any questions about any of these! And happy winter walking!!
